Choosing between Nessus Essentials and Nessus Professional depends mainly on whether the scanner is for personal evaluation or commercial security work. The key differences are usage rights, IP limits, plugin update timing, reporting, compliance checks and price.
Which plan for which team#
Nessus Essentials suits personal, educational and short-term evaluation use, including a very small home network. Nessus Professional suits consultants, pentesters and security professionals conducting commercial, point-in-time vulnerability assessments, according to Tenable’s Nessus comparison.
Essentials is not engineered for enterprise or production environments, and Tenable states that both Nessus Essentials and Nessus Essentials Plus are for non-commercial use only. A small business assessing its own production environment therefore needs to consider Nessus Professional rather than treating the free Essentials license as a commercial deployment option.
Plan limits side by side#
The current Nessus product page lists these differences:
| Plan | Usage | Scan limit | Plugin updates | Reporting | Price | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nessus Essentials | Non-commercial use only | Up to 5 IPs | 30-day delay | Not published in the sources we checked | Free | Tenable Nessus Essentials |
| Nessus Essentials Plus | Non-commercial use only | Up to 20 IPs | Real-time | Basic PDF and HTML | $199/year | Tenable Nessus Essentials |
| Nessus Professional | Commercial use | Unlimited IPs | Real-time | PDF, HTML and CSV | $4,790 | Tenable Nessus Essentials |
Tenable also lists pre-built discovery and vulnerability scan templates for all three offerings. Compliance and configuration checks, data export, Live Results, offline mode and advanced support are not listed as available for Nessus Essentials. The page specifically says Essentials and Essentials Plus do not support unlimited IPs for network scanning, compliance checks, content audits, data exports, Live Results, expanded report options or technical support.
Nessus Professional includes audit scan templates for cloud infrastructure, internal PCI networks, offline configuration, policy compliance, SCAP and OVAL. Tenable also describes more than 1,600 compliance and configuration templates for Nessus, including CIS, DISA STIG, HIPAA, PCI DSS, USGCB and FDCC, at no extra cost.
There is a historical detail worth noting. Tenable’s 2019 announcement described Nessus Essentials as supporting up to 16 IPs with no time limit, while the current product page lists up to 5 IPs and a 30-day license. For a current comparison, the current product page is the more relevant reference; the older details appear in Tenable’s 2019 announcement.
When to upgrade#
Upgrade from Nessus Essentials when the intended use becomes commercial or production-related. The Essentials license is explicitly non-commercial, so using it for a business vulnerability program does not match the stated usage terms.
The five-IP limit is another clear trigger. A team that needs to scan more than five IPs cannot remain within the current Essentials limit. Nessus Professional lists unlimited IPs, while Essentials Plus lists up to 20 IPs but remains non-commercial.
Plugin timing can also matter. Essentials lists a 30-day delay, whereas Essentials Plus and Professional list real-time plugin updates. A team that needs current plugin updates, Live Results, data export, broader reporting or compliance and configuration checks should compare Professional’s listed capabilities with its operational requirements.
The choice is less clear when the work is only a short proof of concept or a personal evaluation. Tenable describes Essentials as intended for short-term evaluations, proof-of-concept testing and very small home networks. In those cases, the free license may be sufficient within its stated limits.
Price difference#
The published price gap is substantial: Nessus Essentials is Free, while Nessus Professional is $4,790, according to Tenable’s product comparison. The page does not identify the currency, billing term or a per-user rate for the Professional price, so a per-user or multi-month cost calculation is not available from the sources we checked.
Nessus Essentials Plus is listed at $199/year, with free access for verified students and instructors. It offers a larger 20-IP limit and real-time plugin updates than Essentials, but it remains for non-commercial use. Teams considering Professional can Check Tenable pricing and confirm the commercial purchase details directly.
