Tenable’s published Nessus comparison identifies Essentials, Essentials Plus and Professional, but it does not identify a product called Nessus Expert. For small and mid-size organizations, the practical choice in the sources we checked is whether a non-commercial Essentials option fits, or whether commercial vulnerability assessment requires Nessus Professional.

Which plan for which team#

Nessus Essentials suits short-term evaluations, proof-of-concept testing and very small home networks, while Essentials Plus is aimed at hobbyists, students and educators who want ongoing non-commercial use. Nessus Professional suits consultants, pentesters and security professionals conducting commercial, point-in-time vulnerability assessments, while a separate Nessus Expert plan is not published in the sources we checked.

Plan limits side by side#

The main dividing lines are commercial eligibility, scan scope, plugin update timing, reporting, and access to features such as compliance checks, data export and Live Results. Tenable’s current product page lists the following comparison:

Area Nessus Essentials Nessus Essentials Plus Nessus Professional Source
Intended use Non-commercial use only Non-commercial use only Commercial use Tenable Nessus offerings
Vulnerability scanning Up to 5 IPs Up to 20 IPs Unlimited IPs Tenable Nessus offerings
Plugin updates 30-day delay Real-time Real-time Tenable Nessus offerings
Discovery and vulnerability templates Listed Listed Listed Tenable Nessus offerings
Compliance and configuration checks Not listed Not listed Includes audit scan templates for cloud infrastructure, internal PCI network, offline configuration, policy compliance, SCAP and OVAL Tenable Nessus offerings
Reporting Not listed Basic PDF and HTML PDF, HTML and CSV Tenable Nessus offerings
Data export Not listed Not listed Listed Tenable Nessus offerings
Live Results Not listed Not listed Listed Tenable Nessus offerings
Offline mode Not listed Not listed Listed Tenable Nessus offerings
Technical support Not included Not included The page does not specify the level Tenable Nessus offerings

The Essentials and Essentials Plus limitations matter for organizations considering them for work. Tenable states that both are for personal, educational and non-commercial purposes only. It also says they do not support unlimited IPs for network scanning, compliance checks, content audits, data exports, Live Results, expanded report options or technical support.

The comparison page adds context about Nessus capabilities. It lists Live Results, vulnerability grouping, web application scanning, continuous subdomain discovery scanning, and 1,600-plus compliance and configuration templates for Nessus. The comparison page does not state that every item is available in every Nessus tier, so those capabilities should not be treated as Essentials or Essentials Plus entitlements. See Tenable’s comparison.

When to upgrade#

Upgrade from Essentials when the intended use becomes commercial, when five IPs are insufficient, or when the organization needs more than a 30-day delay for plugin updates. Essentials Plus extends the limit to 20 IPs and provides real-time plugin updates, but it remains non-commercial.

Nessus Professional is the relevant published option when a team needs unlimited IP scanning, commercial use, the listed compliance and configuration audit templates, PDF, HTML and CSV reporting, data export, Live Results, or offline mode. Tenable describes Professional as its commercial vulnerability assessment tool for consultants, pentesters and security professionals conducting point-in-time assessments.

The sources do not publish an intermediate “Expert” tier or a direct migration price from either Essentials option to Professional. A team comparing Professional with Expert should therefore confirm whether “Expert” refers to a separate product name, a sales description or another licensing arrangement before relying on that label.

Price difference#

The published prices are not presented as per-user rates. Nessus Essentials is listed as Free, Essentials Plus as $199/year, and Nessus Professional as $4,790. Tenable’s product page lists these prices. The sources we checked do not publish a Nessus Expert price, renewal term, or feature list.

These figures are not directly equivalent in use: Essentials and Essentials Plus are restricted to non-commercial purposes, while Professional is for commercial use. Essentials Plus is also described as a low annual cost option for hobbyists, with a 20-IP scan limit, real-time plugin updates, basic PDF and HTML reporting, and year-long data retention. Professional’s published page does not state a subscription period beside its listed price.
